Spotlight Questions:

1. What’s an interesting fact about you? I don’t post very many personal posts. Almost all my content is professional. I’m super private and am not comfortable sharing my life on social media even though that’s what I do for a living.

2. What’s your favorite social media platform and why? I like them all for what they are intended to be when used well. Facebook for connecting personal relationships, Twitter for news, info and concise communication and Instagram for nicely curated photography – letting pictures tell the story.

3. How long have you been in your position? 2.5 years

4. What problem has Class Intercom helped you solve? Being in many places at once and giving a voice to everyone to showcase the diversity in our student body and staff.

5. How are you using Class Intercom at your school? We are using Class Intercom for student takeovers, to empower the senior elective social media class to handle the school accounts and give everyone in the school the chance to tell their story responsibly and using good digital citizenship. Our photography teacher has a group of students who take pictures for IG and focus on their topic of interest at St. Benedict. Her goal – particularly for Instagram – is to eventually have the students’ workflow so streamlined, that it is self-sustaining. The upperclassman create quality photos focusing on their areas of interest while the underclassman build their foundation in entry-level classes and work with older students to learn the process.

 6. Do you involve students in social media creation? If yes, why? Yes, social media posts are stories and they are the storytellers. They are responsible for creating the content and I mostly teach them to market themselves through their message.  The students are the ones with the vision, I just give them the tools and guidelines to create. I find the more rules they have, the more creative they become.

The photography students that create content are students in Photo II or Advanced Photography who already have a solid foundation with photography. They are most interested in creating content for Instagram since they have been taught the importance of visual messages and visual literacy. Our students really embrace diversity, and they want to share what their peers are doing in school and outside of school. They really watch out for each other in that sense and want everyone to contribute to the SBA brand.

7. Do you have any social media posts that you or your students have created that you consider successful? This Instagram post had great engagement and highlights the service-oriented culture of our students.
